Last week RS talked up Gorillaz’s Plastic Beach in New Reviews, so today we’re spotlighting Breaking band Broken Bells, a collaboration between the Shins’ James Mercer and Demon Days producer Danger Mouse. The pairing might seem like a strange match, but as Will Hermes writes in his four-star review of Broken Bells, “It turns out the two pop-science geeks are a perfect match. Danger Mouse pushes Mercer’s gorgeous, existential tunecraft outward with Day-Glo dynamics.” Mercer’s lyrics are at their loneliest while Danger Mouse brings beats that sound like “hip-hop for turned-on shut-ins.” The best tracks here at first single “The High Road” and the bouncy “Vaporize.”
Also out this week: a collection of some of the final recordings Jimi Hendrix ever made, presented here as Valleys of Neptune. Of all the unearthed songs on Neptune, the title track is a major highlight, along with the bluesy, horns-soaked “Ships Passing Through the Night” and rerecorded versions Jimi classics “Stone Free” and “Fire.” “Are these tracks ‘finished’ as Hendrix would’ve intended?” Hermes asks in his three-and-a-half star review of Neptune. “Probably not. But as a glimpse of the guitarist extending his reach beyond the Experience trio, it’s thrilling.”
With a new drummer kicking out Zeppelin stomps, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club also return this week with their fifth album Beat the Devil’s Tattoo. BMRC continue their musical odyssey from rock roots to garage goth on their latest disc, which earned a three-star rating from RS. “Devil’s Tattoo is unremittingly grim, and undeniably fun. Few bands wear their frowns so well,” Jody Rosen writes.

Next week when hundreds of bands head to Texas for the annual South By Southwest Music Festival, Rolling Stone will be on the ground in Austin bringing you incredible photos, interviews, our first-ever SXSW showcases and a special treat: 100 tweeted show reviews @RollingStone by contributor Christopher R. Weingarten, who recently completed his 1000TimesYes project — 1,000 140-character album reviews in a year.
On Thursday, March 18th, RS will feature Dawes, the Whigs, the Low Anthem, Titus Andronicus, Free Energy and Deer Tick at the Palm Door. The following night, Band of Skulls, Jimmie Dale and Colin Gilmore, Court Yard Hounds, John Doe, Rye Rye and Nneka will take the stage at the same venue.
We’ll be charting all the festival’s action with one goal: to get a feel for the biggest sets, the smallest parties, the guerilla shows on restaurant patios, the formidable lineups of metal and hip-hop. “By attending 100 shows, big and small, I’m hoping to capture the breadth and depth of Austin and the music industry circa 2010 ̬ all in tweet-sized gulps,” Weingarten says. As for how he’ll survive, Weingarten has a plan. “I figure my tee-totaling ways might put me at an advantage, providing me with the boundless energy I will need. However I do expect my undying love of Salt Lick BBQ and weakness for sweet tea to severely hinder my movements. But I feel truly blessed that RollingStone.com has asked me to do this, since there will be nothing to separate me or distract from experiencing music. It should be every critic’s duty and passion to experience as much music as humanly possible.”
We’ll be posting daily recaps of Weingarten’s Twitter coverage here on Rock Daily, along with video documenting his journeys and recaps of the festival’s other major events. Get ready for the action by looking back at photos from SXSW ‘09 and entering our sweepstakes to win a trip to the fest to check out Stone Temple Pilots.

A new LCD Soundsystem track hit the Internet last night, but “Oh You (Christmas Blues)” isn’t off James Murphy’s upcoming LCD album. Instead, the bluesy number is one of dozen or so songs Murphy penned for the Ben Stiller film Greenberg, and the one song on the soundtrack to appear under the LCD Soundsystem name. Listen to a radio rip of the song over at We All Want Someone to Shout For. Despite being credited to LCD, “Oh You (Christmas Blues)” sounds nothing like Sound of Silver, with Murphy instead unveiling a stark song that combines Pink Floyd’s Animals with John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band.
Given the tone and the title, we can already picture Stiller’s character sitting alone and despondent on a Christmas morning on the big screen. The Greenberg soundtrack is due out March 23rd and should definitely help kill the time before LCD Soundsystem’s “crazy” Sound of Silver follow-up is released on May 15th. You can preorder the Greenberg soundtrack now over at Amazon and other digital retailers.

Smudged eyeliner! Feathered hair! Straddling of a mic stand! Is it hot in here, or is that just Dakota Fanning kissing Kristen Stewart? I don’t know, but I want in.
The bad news: the “Cherry Bomb” video is only a few minutes long. The good news: there’s an entire movie where that come from. The highly anticipated (by me, especially) biopic The Runaways is out March 19 (finally). The “Cherry Bomb” video is basically a glorified trailer for the movie itself, but it also showcases Dakota Fanning’s eerily on-point dropkick vocal chops. Girl IS Cherie Currie. Tick tick BOOM.

Like many people, R&B star and ex-wifey to rapper Nas, Kelis likes to post pictures of herself to Facebook. Because when you get down to it, Facebook is there to see who from high school got fat and to post flattering pictures of yourself.
Unlike most people, Kelis’ latest foray into sharing herself with others involves the above shot, taken by acclaimed photographer Rankin, from the set of her video for “Acapella.” She looks like a combination of a Na’vi warrior and Tina Turner from Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
We kind of warned you something like this was on the horizon. A few weeks back we noticed that Kelis had clearly caught a bit of Lady Gaga fever in her quest to be “out there” with her threads. She’s been rocking the fake gray hair and nose ring/earring/necklace combo for a while. The Pandora-friendly blue lighting and chain-mail blouse are nice new touches, though.
Officially cannot wait for the “Acapella” video. It’s due to be the first clip from her album, Fleshtones, due out in May. Never change, Kelis.
With a barrage of preincarceration records from Lil’ Wayne (Rebirth, We Are Young Money), the arrival of Drake’s first single, “Over,” and news that Kanye West was working on his new album, Good Ass Job, in Hawaii, it’s been a good time to be a hip-hop fan. But something’s been missing.
We’re thinking you’ll agree that within the first few seconds of his postincarceration single, “I’m Back,” “something” was T.I. After being released from prison earlier this month (he’s fulfilling the rest of his sentence under home confinement), T.I. went right back to work. The result is this bouncing, bass-heavy blast of boasts — a statement of intent that this man is BACK.
If you couldn’t hear the passion in his voice, T.I. made his intentions plain, recently telling MTV News, “As long as there is air in my esophagus, champ, I’mma keep going.” Long live T.I. May his esophagus be full of air for a long, long time.

In the new She And Him video for the song “In The Sun,” off the duo’s upcoming album Volume Two, singer Zooey Deschanel literally dances circles around her cooler-than-cool musical counterpart M. Ward, while he struts and skulks through the halls like a modern-day James Dean. Swoon!
Truth be told, I’m not a huge fan of Ward’s soul patch, but when he breaks into a guitar solo amid a sea of hula hoops, it’s like nothing else matters.
Watch the video for “In The Sun” by She And Him below. The band’s second album, appropriately titled Volume Two, comes out March 23.

Even though T.I. is finishing up his prison sentence in an Atlanta halfway house, the rapper loudly announced his own comeback with a new single titled “I’m Back” today. Listen to the track over at Tip’s own Trap Muzik Website, where you can also purchase a high quality or low quality download of the song. According to Nah Right, “I’m Back” is just the opening salvo of T.I.’s return, with the rapper’s follow-up to 2008’s Paper Trail due out in August.
A day in the life of T.I.: photos of the MC’s days before prison.
While T.I.’s pre-prison Paper Trail singles were more reflective and concerned with the hardship he was about to endure — see “Dead and Gone” with Justin Timberlake and “Remember Me” with Mary J. Blige — “I’m Back” finds T.I. recapturing his King flow over an icy Southern beat by Grand Hustle producers TrackSlayerz. “The track is hard. It brings you back to the old T.I.,” the producers recently told Vibe. “He’s coming back with the aggressive, mean kind of swag. It’s definitely a [street single]. He’s kinda addressing that he’s been on a little hiatus with the jail sentence and don’t worry about that [because] he hasn’t fallen off.” Throughout the chorus, T.I. tells listeners to “recognize I’m back,” and this comeback single makes it all but impossible to ignore Tip’s return.
As Rolling Stone previously reported, after being released from an Arkansas penitentiary more than halfway through his year-and-a-day-long prison sentence stemming from weapons charges, T.I. is currently in an ATL halfway house, where the rapper will remain until his sentence expires on March 26th. The rapper has reportedly been hard at work making up for lost recording time since his release, and Tip revealed during an “I’m Back” conference call that his next album will be released late this summer.

Last week, Rolling Stone wondered if Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were putting together a North American tour after shows in North Dakota and Minnesota hit Ticketmaster. Today the duo confirmed the news, announcing a 13-date North American trek that kicks off with their April 24th gig at New Orleans’ Jazz & Heritage Festival. Though most of the stops will focus on Canada, the iconic folk duo will hit Saint Paul, Minnesota; Fargo, North Dakota; Madison, Wisconsin, and Detroit. Most dates go on sale March 12th at 10 am.
Simon and Garfunkel — who split 1970 and reunited for sporadic performances over the years — hit the road in 2003 for the massively popular “Old Friends” tour, selling out 12 of 14 U.S. dates and grossing over $2 million dollars per city, according to Pollstar. Most recently, the pair got together in November to perform at the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where they delivered a rousing rendition of “Cecilia.”
On the upcoming trek, Simon and Garfunkel will focus on songs from their classic catalog, although the duo promise to spice up their set lists with material from both Simon and Garfunkel’s respective solo catalogs.

On Friday, Rock Daily was pondering Lil Wayne’s impending trip to prison — and T.I.’s last days of incarceration — and asked our readers to muse on the concept of “Freedom” for our Weekend Rock List. The results are in, and they are pretty literal: seven of the Top 10 tracks include the word “Free,” though Bob Marley’s inspiring “Redemption Song” and Aretha Franklin’s “Think” also made the cut. Check out the list and our gallery of rock-star mug shots:
1. Neil Young – “Rockin’ In The Free World”
2. Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Free Bird”
3. Tom Petty – “Free Fallin’”
4. Rush – “Freewill”
5. Queen – “I Want To Break Free”
6. R.E.M. – “Radio Free Europe”

Rolling Stone’s recent headline “Lil Wayne Goes to Jail” has finally come true: After a pair of temporary reprieves, Lil Wayne was officially sentenced to a year behind bars in a New York courtroom today after pleading guilty to weapons charges stemming from an incident in the Big Apple in 2007. Following the sentencing, Wayne was handcuffed as he exited the courthouse en route to New York’s Riker’s Island, the city jail where the rapper will serve his prison stint. According to the AP, Weezy’s legal team requested that he be placed in protective custody as opposed to the general population due to his status as a celebrity and the numerous dental surgeries the rapper underwent prior to his sentencing.
Lil Wayne’s World: look back at the rapper’s rise in photos.
USA Today reports that while Wayne was given a year-long sentence, there’s a good chance he’ll only spend two-thirds, or eight months, of his term behind bars, as in these situations inmate often get time off for good behavior. Wayne sat quietly next to his legal team during his sentencing, opting not to address the court and simply nodding his head when the judge asked whether he understood the charges he was facing. Upon exiting the courthouse, his hands handcuffed behind his back, he gave the crowd of 100 fans and supporters a slight bow before heading off to prison.
As Rolling Stone previously reported, Weezy managed to avoid sentencing twice prior to finally being shipped off to prison today: Wayne’s initial sentencing was postponed three weeks so the rapper could undergo dental procedures — reportedly eight root canal surgeries — before starting his jail term. Last week, a courthouse fire forced Weezy’s sentencing to be postponed yet again, and Wayne celebrated his unexpected freedom by appearing onstage with Young Jeezy and Drake at Jay-Z’s Madison Square Garden concert. Wayne spent the rest of his last week of freedom on Twitter and Ustream, and unveiled on last pre-prison video for “Drop the World.”
