HUNDREDS of Beatles fans descended on Abbey Road today to mark the 40th anniversary of the album cover shoot.

They walked across the famous crossing that features the Fab Four walking across on the album, and gathered in the north west London street to meet and sing songs.

Four Beatles lookalikes then walked across the crossing to recreate the classic picture.

The day had been organised by Beatles tour guide and owner of the nearby Beatles cafe, Richard Porter.

He said: “The picture is just so easy to copy – well normally it is easy to copy. It is simple and it’s like a shrine to the Beatles.”

Tony Bramwell, the band’s former road manager also joined in the anniversary event.  He said: “Other than Paul and Ringo, I’m the only person alive who was here on that day.

“It’s great to see that the whole thing carries on. Through the musical genres and revolutions of the last 40 years the Beatles are still number one.”

The Beatles recorded much of their work at the Abbey Road studio.
