Also out this week is the long-awaited debut album by D.C. rapper Wale, who previously made waves with a mixtape dedicated to Seinfeld and an opening slot on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 tour. Attention Deficit features guests like Lady Gaga and Pharrell while boasting production by heavyweights like Mark Ronson, Cool & Dre and Dave Sitek. Nothing on Wale’s debut is as strange as him rapping about Jerry and Elaine: “Wale instead fashions himself Kanye East, a mix of aspiration and anger, given to jazzy moralizing á la the Roots yet not above tapping Lady Gaga for the single ‘Chillin,’” Jon Dolan says in his three-star review.

Earning a four-star review from Rolling Stone is Dashboard Confessional’s album Alter the Ending. Jody Rosen writes that the emo godfather’s sixth album “is a return to full-bore rock after the mellow Shade of Poison Trees (2007), and songs like the raucous ‘New Morning’ ooze craft.” One more release of note this week is Snow Patrol’s Up To Now, a collection of the Irish rockers’ biggest, Coldplay-esque hits.

In this clip, taken from the soundtrack to Disney’s upcoming animated film, The Princess And The Frog, Ne-Yo longingly wanders around New Orleans’ French Quarter recalling a past love.

There’s a nice symmetry to the video’s setting and the funeral march tumble of the beat. The whole soundtrack — which features songs from Anika Noni Rose and soundtrack maestro Randy Newman  — shares the N.O. vibe. The Princess And The Frog hits theaters on November 26th, while the soundtrack’s out on the 23rd. Check out Ne-Yo’s video and The Princess And The Frog trailer below.

Hopefully you didn’t miss Rihanna on yesterday’s episode of It’s On With Alexa Chung. Yes, Rihanna — whose new single, “Hard” could be the next “Umbrella” — did touch upon the outpouring of fans who’ve supported her decision to speak out and help encourage other women who’ve been the victims of abuse. But she spent most of her time on It’s On With Alexa Chung totally relaxed, joking around, meeting her fans (one of whom received a Rihanna makeover) and having fun with fashion — specifically Alexa Chung’s Museum of Rihanna Art, which exhibited some of Rihanna’s best accessories to date and gave her the chance to discuss how and why she’s adopted such edgy looks. It was a great look at a woman who’s clearly taken back the power which is hers, moved on, and is back to being a fun-loving young woman who’s living her life.

Directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, “Keeping On Without You” (taken from their Who Are You Now album) finds the Seattle band plying their trade in the wake of what looks like a tornado; jamming amidst the wrecked houses and wrecked lives.

By the end of the proceedings, the houses are still mostly piles of rubble, but it does seem like (spoiler alert) rock and roll makes the sun come out. Which is something, at least.

While your TV set isn’t exactly a towering IMAX screen, you still will be able to appreciate Live at the Max’s crisp picture and excellent audio quality. In addition to the Stones’ greatest hits, ranging from “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” the 90-minute film also boasts a trio of Steel Wheels songs.

The DVD release of Live at the Max comes just a week after the Rolling Stones’ reissued perhaps their most famous live document, Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! The Rolling Stones in Concert, for its own 40th anniversary. Another Stones’ film, the controversial 1972 documentary Cocksucker Blues, recently had a rare screening in New York.

Apologies in advance for the bad food analogy I’m about to make. Clearly I’m bitter about the free bag of generic popcorn I just inhaled for lunch (with “insert brand name of prescription drug you can’t pronounce” printed on the bag). Anyway, you could kind of liken the Florida music scene to a Cracker Barrel menu. Don’t get me wrong: I am ALL for some Hickory Smoked Honey Glazed Ham (Backstreet Boys) and cheese grits (Matchbox Twenty).  And who knows? Maybe I want to wash down my chicken ‘n dumplings (2 Live Crew) with some box wine (Dashboard Confessional).  But Miami synth-rock/electro-pop act Awesome New Republic seems to have just the right amount of pop amazingness without sounding trite (think the electronic bits and driving beats of Miike Snow blended with the psychedelic sweetness of Passion Pit).

Earlier this year, Awesome New Republic — John Hancock, Brian Robertson, and newly-added-for-tour Jorge Rubiera — had a Perez Hilton pop moment when P’rezzers posted a Leighton Meester cover of their track “Birthday.” Side note: Leighton seems to have a knack for hanging with the boys (not that way, pervtown), as evidenced by this summer’s smash Cobra Starship collabo “Good Girls Go Bad” to the literally just-released video “Somebody To Love,” featuring Robin Thicke.

Now, with their brand-new album Hearts, just released on October 27th, and their song “Magic City” (from the previously released EP Rational Geographic Vol. 1) appropriately featured in tomorrow’s Miami-bound episode of The City, Awesome New Republic just might be the best band you’ve never heard of. You’re welcome.

Funny thing is, while Songz is hardly a re-tread of R. Kelly, he does share some qualities with he who was trapped in the closet, especially on two of the singles from his ‘09 platter, Ready.

On “LOL ” (yes, that’s WITH a smileyface emoticon) and “I Invented Sex,” Songz comes with an irrefutably catchy melody (“LOL )”and wanton sexual arrogance (“I Invented…”), respectively; two staples of the R. Kelly repertoire. Personally I like “LOL ” (which you can jam to your heart’s content here) the more because a) Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane are on it b) it’s incredibly playful, as any song about texting should be and c) IT’S CALLED LOL SMILEY FACE.

Not that there’s anything particularly wrong with “I Invented Sex,” which you can watch in all its NSFW/ walked-in-on-someone’s-sex-tape glory below, as well as an MTV News Trey Songz interview about the “concept” surrounding the video.

Sliimy had a series of Los Angeles denziens hold paper cut-outs of him, syncing the stop-motion mannerisms to the song. The result is something incredibly slick, while still retaining a homemade feel. Not unlike Sliimy’s music.

Just two concerts into Britney Spears’ Circus Tour in Australia and the singer is already the center of controversy Down Under. Reviews of Spears’ tour-opening shows in Perth were negative, with critics complaining about the fact that Spears lip-synchs during her performance. While Spears’ lip-synching is no secret to American audiences, Australia’s WA Today called Spears’ first of 14 shows “heavy on miming and light on audience interaction,” adding that she “often had her back to much of the crowd.”

Amid reports that audience members left the show disappointed — with some even walking out on the performance before it ended — the tour’s promoter Paul Dainty told The Australian “Britney is aware of all this and she’s extremely upset by it. She’s a human being. I’m embarrassed, with such a big international entourage here with Britney, to be part of the Australian media when I see that kind of totally inaccurate reporting.” Spears’ manager Adam Leber also came to the singer’s defense, writing on Twitter that “It’s unfortunate that one journalist in Perth didn’t enjoy the show last night. Fortunately the other 18,272 fans in attendance did.”

All the hullabaloo around Spears’ performance also caught the attention of New South Wales’ Fair Trade Minister Victoria Judge, who said tickets to Spears’ concerts should carry a disclaimer stating the show is prerecorded, People reports. “It is Britney’s ‘prerogative’ to lip-sync, and it is my job to make sure consumers know what they are paying for up front,” Judge said in a government-backed statement. Rolling Stone noted Spears’ lip-synched performance when the tour kicked off back in March, but that only minimally detracted from the live spectacle of the Circus show.

Yet somehow in all of this, John Mayer has emerged as the voice of reason, with the Battle Studies singer tweeting this weekend, “If you’re shocked that Britney was lip-syncing at her concert and want your money back, life may continue to be hard for you.” Spears’ controversial trek across Australia continues November 11th with a three-night stand in Melbourne.
