Post-hard core can bring out the screaming hair-puller in most of us, so it’s great to see a post-HC band like Pierce The Veil, who knows how to have fun with the dark side of music.

Formerly known as Before Today, Pierce The Veil has made two albums of cathartic, highly technical heavy rock. On its recently released Selfish Machines, the group mixes the glam and gloom of My Chemical Romance with the prog-rock fireworks of Dillinger Escape Plan and Coheed And Cambria.

On stage, however, (PTV are road warriors, touring with the likes of Mayday Parade and Devil Wears Prada), the band mixes in contemporary pop classics into its songs, as anyone who has witnessed its takes on Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” and Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” can attest.

Last summer, L.A.-via-Nashville songstress Ashlyne Huff turned a lot of heads with her breakout debut single, “Heart Of Gold.” With her sultry vocals, pop savvy and subtle twang, Huff’s music draws from a variety of influences to make her own sweet sound.

The daughter of producer/guitarist Dan Huff, Ashlyne is an accomplished songwriter in her own right, having a hand in the construction of all of her own material. It’s in the vocal booth and on stage, however, where the singer really shines. Ashlyne just finished a tour with Honor Society and Just Kait, and she’s back on the road with Jordin Sparks.

Listening to Ashlyne’s tracks on her recently released self-titled EP, Huff sounds like a more grown up, less starry eyed Taylor Swift. Her love songs are detailed, and her breakup jams cut deep.

If you find yourself pining for the shouty, incessantly catchy, punk-pop of bands like The Vines or The Hives, meet New Politics.

Originally from Denmark, the band now plies their trade in Brooklyn. The trio, made up of David Boyd, Søren Hansen, and Poul Amaliel, joined together out of necessity. Boyd and Hansen entered into a Danish songwriting competition on a whim. When their submission was selected as a finalist, they quickly hired Amaliel to fill the void on drums.

New Politics excel at stripped-down, energetic jams that get straight to the point. Whether they’re taking aim at “The Man,” as they do on their wonderful track, “Dignity,” or just generally freaking out (see their single, “Yeah Yeah Yeah”), they always charm with their off-kilter, minimal arrangements and unbridled energy.

We first met Alexis Jordan on America’s Got Talent. The then-14-year-old South Carolina singer wowed audiences (and Simon Cowell) with her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” And she hasn’t stopped wowing since.

Whether it was in live performance or on one of her many, popular YouTube videos (such as her version of Beyonce’s “Halo”), Alexis’ talent has been undeniable. Eventually, her pipes — far more soulful and emotionally articulate than one would expect from a girl her age — caught the ears of Stargate (the production team behind Rihanna’s “Take A Bow,” and a bunch of Ne-Yo’s best-known material), and Alexis landed a record deal with StarRoc/Roc Nation.

Alexis Jordan, now 18, is currently finishing up her debut album with Stargate. And if her debut single, “Happiness” is anything to go by, we’re in for a real treat. Featuring the production team’s trademark dance-soul backing track, Jordan shows off some maturity on this sleek single.
