New Interview: Katy Perry On Amish Girls And Her Favorite ‘Cali Gurl,’ Judy Jetson!
Author: webcBy now it’s common knowledge that Katy Perry wrote “California Gurls” so West Coasters wouldn’t get all pouty over the East Coast’s bragging rights that came with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State Of Mind.” But in this new MTV.com interview, Katy Perry explains how “California Gurls” became a one-size-fits-all-gurls anthem inspired by a tweet from an Amish girl (wait, the Amish use Twitter?!?).
Katy also reveals which “California Gurls” are her favorite West Coast gurls, including Katy’s style icon Bettie Page, who wasn’t from California but did die there. And Katy also looks into her “California Gurls” crystal ball and predicts that Judy Jetson will be the “California Gurl” of the future!
Plus, come back to Buzzworthy tomorrow when we’ll have behind-the-scenes video footage from Katy’s “California Gurls” video. And check out our 10 favorite things about “California Gurls.”
Last month we introduced you to the YouTube sensation/Oprah-fave/mini-Celine-Dion that is Charice and her breakthrough video for “Pyramid.” We were so compelled by Charice’s undeniable charm, only-on-the-Internet-could-this-happen story and her powerful voice that we had to track her down and ask her a few questions.
In this Buzzworthy interview, Charice talks about the influence that her mom’s musical career had on her and how her mom “discovered” her talent when she caught a then 4-year-old Charice singing Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.”
Charice also dispenses some advice on competing in singing competitions, compares life as a teenager in the United States and in her native Philippine, and dishes some details on her “Oprah” appearances.
Check out our Charice interview as well as her video for “Pyramid,” featuring Iyaz, both below.
New Interview: Rooney On Illegal Downloading, High School And A Cameo In Sofia Coppola’s New Movie
Author: webc
(Credit: Drew Reynolds)
We don’t know about you, but our favorite episode of “The O.C.” is definitely “The Third Wheel,” where the entire Newport gang goes gaga over the band Rooney. (R.I.P Soap Net AND Marissa Cooper!)
Sure, we never really believed anyone except Seth Cohen would actually like a band as awesome as Rooney, but we were stoked for the L.A. group to get some well-deserved attention. Six years later, Rooney is still stealing the spotlight with its latest album, Eureka, and an upcoming summer tour with The Young Veins and Black Gold.
Lucky for us, we were able to grab a couple minutes with three-fourths of Rooney to talk about the perils of illegal downloading, high-school passions and those pesky rumors about Rooney making an appearance in Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film, “Somewhere.” Plus, watch for a special appearance by the Double Down, and see what influence peeing in Robert Schwartzman’s yard had on making Rooney’s new album, Eureka.
Watch our exclusive sit-down with the guys from Rooney, below and then check out Rooney’s new “I Can’t Get Enough” video, off its new album Eureka, out now.
New Interview: Green Day On ‘Rock Band,’ Old-School Video Games And Tour Injuries
Author: webc
We’re just one week away from the release of “Green Day: Rock Band,” as one of the biggest acts in the world conquers an all-new medium: video games. It features 47 of the Berkeley boys’ greatest tracks, including all of Dookie, American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown.
Recently, Buzzworthy had a chance to talk with Green Day about the game, the group’s all-time best MTV memories and some of the more painful events that have gone down while they were out on tour. We also asked them about the songs that aren’t included in “Green Day: Rock Band.” Of the songs that didn’t make the cut, only two are Green Day songs. One is “Stop Drop and Roll” by their recent side project The Foxboro Hot Tubs, and the other, as Mike Dirnt notes, is a Who cover. The last song that Billie Joe offers up is “Hungry Hungry Models” by The Network -– a band long rumored to be Green Day in disguise, though Green Day’s never confirmed its involvement in the group. Interesting … very interesting.
Watch Green Day discuss the music of “Green Day: Rock Band,” video games, plus their all-time favorite MTV moments, their sickest tour injuries and more in this exclusive interview. In the meantime, check out new “Green Day: Rock Band” video mods for “Know Your Enemy,” “Last of the American Girls” and “21 Guns.” And don’t forget: “Green Day: Rock Band” drops Tuesday, June 8!
We already know that Jordan Witzigreuter makes catchy electro-emo with hip-hop leanings as The Ready Set. And we already know dude is a licensed reseller of LOLs, with his hilarious viral videos, which occasionally costar his label boss, Pete Wentz. Now it’s time to learn even more about the enigmatic young artist.
In this episode of “The 5,” we learn about Witzigreuter’s DIY aesthetic. He played most of the instruments on The Ready Set’s recordings. Both America AND Jordan Witzigreuter got talent.
Things get a little more wistful (and weird) when Witzigreuter recalls the days when he used to want to be a dinosaur. The nostalgia theme continues as he remembers the time when he dyed his hair blue. It was not a good look.
Watching this video (as well as The Ready Set’s “Love Like Woe” clip) is, however, a good look. And you may do so below. The Ready Set’s Tantrum Castle is out now. I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming is out June 15.
New Interview: Courtney Love Talks Twitter, Etsy, Britney And Christina, And Not Competing With Gaga
Author: webc
It became clear to me when I interviewed Courtney Love, as it will to you when you watch the videos below, that Courtney Love is not the type of woman who gets interrupted often. She’s the opposite of timid, and, as she freely admits in this interview, she has no filter. But it’s part of her dynamic. And why should Courtney Love stop talking? She’s a walking, talking, full-color book of stories and opinions. She’s funny, open, she freely admits her shortcomings, and she’s completely honest. Many musicians show up at MTV having memorized their press release. Courtney Love is not that girl. (She expressly told me she hates talking about what her songs mean.)
Courtney Love has been the grunge poster girl, married to one of the most iconic rock figures of the 20th century, and with four Hole albums down — including the latest Hole album, Nobody’s Daughter, she’s created some of the most influential female-fronted rock music of all time. Clearly, Courtney Love has had experiences that you and I have not, nor will we ever have.
In this exclusive MTV Buzzworthy Blog interview, Courtney Love shares experiences that are quintessentially hers — convincing Linda Perry to give her “Beautiful” instead of Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears (we know how that ended up); playing a private Vegas show in a Balenciaga dress; Kurt Cobain calling her the greatest f— in the world. And there are some experiences Courtney Love shares that are universal — making money, the nuances of bipolar disorder, Twitter, Etsy addictions (Courtney spent six figures on Etsy), and body functions. Also, you probably don’t have to deal with Lady Gaga’s stylistic influence on the changing face of the music industry and the chasm between rock and pop. But Courtney Love does. She’s the “queen of rock and roll,” and at the same time, she’s down-to-earth enough to be your next-door neighboor.
Watch Courtney Love cover all of those topics and much more in these exclusive Buzzworthy interviews.
New Interview: Fefe Dobson On Being ‘A Real, True Muffin Baker,’ Mariah Carey And Starting Fires
Author: webcFefe Dobson is a pretty spunky rock gal out of Canada who makes spitfire rock singles like “I Want You,” which fall somewhere between Joan Jett and the White Stripes.
But this is “The 5,” and rarely on “The 5″ do we speak of what people sound like or what their recording process is like. “The 5″ is where you find out about the little oddities, idiosyncrasies and weird/fun facts that make the artists who they are.
So, in the case of Fefe Dobson we learn that the young singer/songwriter has a love for baking muffins, counts herself as a devoted follower of the Church of Mariah Carey (we also belong!), pledges undying allegiance to her first-generation iPod (the old brick-looking joint) and reveals her nearly legal blindness (true!) and her penchant for pyromania (somewhat exaggerated).
Learn about all these things and more in Fefe’s episode of “The 5,” plus watch her awesome “I Want You” video and two of her favorite Mariah jams.
Alkaline Trio are a hard-working pop-punk band from a blue-collar city (Chicago) who grind out album after album of gravel-voiced, heartbroken anthems. With their latest album, This Addiction, currently soundtracking countless break-ups and make-ups, we thought we’d sit down with the veteran band and have a little chat.
In this episode of “The 5,” Alkaline Trio talked about going back to their roots, recording This Addiction at their old sonic stomping grounds of Atlas Studio in the Chi. Speaking of origins, the boys also talk about where their band name came from. They also chat about their new, self-owned label, Heart & Skull.
Check out the interview below, as well their classic “Help Me” video from their 2008 release, Agony & Irony.
New Interview: Cage The Elephant On England, Peanut Butter And Their New Album
Author: webcCage The Elephant make stomping, punky blues rock that reflects their disaffected youth and their Bowling Green, Kentucky roots. So it only makes sense that they’d be bigger in England than the States, right? Wait, wha?!
Yeah, this Kentucky power trio, who make rock jams for the skaters, the geeks and the kids on the margins, are actually bigger across the pond than they are on these shores; a fact they discuss on this episode of “The 5.” Their Brit popularity stems from some time they spent over in London, near an area called “Murder Mile.”
Cage The Elephant also discuss stuff like crunchy vs. smooth peanut butter, say “true story” many times, and discuss the recording of their second album, the follow-up to their 2009 self-titled debut.
Check out the interview, as well as Cage The Elephant’s “In One Ear” video below.
Travie McCoy, the frontman for Gym Class Heroes and now solo artist, is a busy dude. He’s readying his new album, Lazarus, for a June 8 release; he’s got an underground single with Ke$ha (“Want U Bad“) and a real one, “Billionaire” with Bruno Mars, pinging around the solar system. Plus, he’s preparing to head out on his Too Fast For Love tour with Cobra Starship and 3Oh!3.
So with all that in mind we thought it would be best to sit down with Travie and have him give us the lay of what’s going on in Travieland, as it were. In the below interview clips you’ll hear all about the sound of Lazarus and meaning behind the album title. But most importantly, McCoy discusses his infatuation with the ’80s pop-soul duo, Hall & Oates.
Dude really likes Hall & Oates. Like, he has the Private Eyes album cover tattooed on his hands. That’s dedication.
Check out our brand-new interviews with Travie McCoy below. And get tickets to the Too Fast For Love tour. Select dates from this tour will also be mtvU Movies and Music Festival dates leading up to the big show airing June 6 at 9/8c on MTV.
New Interview: Vita Chambers On Spiders, Romantic Movies And Macaroni Pie
Author: webcLast month we introduced you the shuffle-pop sound of Vita Chambers. Drawing comparisons to Pink, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, Vita Chambers makes eclectic, exuberant danceable tracks with the passion of a true music lover. And nowhere is that more on display than her Lil-Wayne & Friends homage, “Young Money.”
So you know about her music, now it’s time to get to know the girl. In this episode of “The 5” Vita Chambers talks about her deep fear of spiders and the way romantic films trigger her waterworks (she recently teared up at Miley Cyrus‘ “The Last Song”). You’ll also find her to be an avowed foodie, as she gives up the details on a delicacy of her Barbados homeland, macaroni pie (totally going there now).
Check out Vita Chambers’ episode of “The 5″ below, as well as her video for “Young Money.” Chambers’ The Get Go EP is out now.
“All The Way Turn Up,” sounds great in the club, on headphones, sung out loud in the shower…pretty much anywhere. It’s an anthem you likely hear all summer long, so get used to it. But who is this Roscoe Dash who is doing the turning? That’s where “The 5″ comes in.
In this episode we meet the faux-hawked MC Roscoe Dash who, along with Soulja Boy, brought “All The Way Turnt Up” into our lives. The Atlanta MC talks about his distinctive faux-hawk cut and the valiant sacrifices he made on the set of the “All The Way…” video in the name of haircut trendsetting. He also talks about the laborious task of coming up with his stage name (it’s a reference to a character from “The Incredibles”) and outs himself as an Xbox addict and “Twitter head.”
Check out the interview below, as well as the video for “All The Way Turnt Up.”

Lots of times in interviews, artists beat around the bush, give vague answers and stick to promoting their work without giving you much insight into their personality.
That is not the case with this episode of “The 5,” with Boston rapper Sam Adams. Right off the bat, the maker of the Asher Roth answer/diss song “I Hate College” lets you know what’s on his mind: girls. Adams is as confident in his ability to pick up ladies as he is terrified to commit to him. Well, at least he’s honest.
Adams goes on to pretty much give his extra-musical resume; detailing his achievements in the classroom and on the soccer field.
Watch the video below and get to know this up-and-coming Beantown MC. And head over to his MySpace page to hear “I Hate College” and a grip of other tracks.
Rapper and dance craze instigator Soulja Boy is in the Billboard.com studios taking your questions live via Twitter on Friday 4/16 at 2pm EST. You can ask him what you want to know now!

With their new album, Year Of The Rainbow, prepped and ready to drop on April 13th, we thought it’d be a perfect time to ask the hirsute men behind prog-rock outfit Coheed And Cambria some questions. But then we thought, wait, why should we do the asking when Coheed fans are some of the most passionate and knowledgeable fans out there.
So that’s why we’re throwing open the doors of journalism to all you Coheed fans. Ask Claudio Sanchez and the boys anything that comes to mind. Quiz them on the making of Year… and how it differs from their powerful releases, ask ‘em about touring with Slipknot last year. It’s up to you.
+ Leave your questions for Coheed And Cambria in the comments section of this post, and stay tuned for the video interview, coming soon. For now, bang your head to their video for “The Broken,” the first single from Year Of The Rainbow, and watch Coheed And Cambria’s new promo video to find out more about the inspiration behind Year Of The Rainbow.
As a native of the British Virgin Islands, Iyaz (you know his smash hit, “Replay,” as there’s no way it’s not replaying itself in your head) knows a thing or two about having fun in the sun. So we asked him if he had any spring break advice to pass on to America’s youth.
First, Iyaz gets some board of tourism pimping out of the way, suggesting vacationers hit the Virgin Islands for a good time. For Iyaz, the perfect spring break day involves very little daytime. He suggests you sleep late, eat well, tool around on a motorcycle and party hardy deep into the night. Not bad advice! Just don’t get the order of those things wrong. We wouldn’t want you to blame him for partying or sleeping on your motorcycle.
In the second clip, Iyaz talks about “Solo,” his new single.
Check out both videos below.

When Adam Lambert isn’t busy hanging out with Boy George or making out with Ke$ha, he’s doing what he does best — performing.
It wasn’t so long ago that Glambert visited the VH1 studios and delivered a stripped-down “Unplugged” performance of songs like “Mad World,” originally recorded by Tears For Fears, and “Music Again,” off Adam’s album For Your Entertainment. He even took the time to explain the inspiration behind his newest single, “Whataya Want From Me,” as seen in the video below.
For a closer look at Adam’s performance, check out our exclusive flipbook and be sure to watch the interview below.
Plus, in case you were wondering, that is former Yellowcard drummer Longineu W. Parsons III banging the skins. I know, I know … You can sleep much easier tonight knowing that tidbit of information.
The story is almost too good to be true: Random dude approaches super-producer Randy Jackson in a Los Angeles diner, starts talking about his band, writes down his phone number and said band’s MySpace page and skadaddles. A couple hours later, Jackson calls the dude and says he digs the tuneage and wants to work with the band. Crazy, right?
The random dude was Aswan North and his band, Paper Tongues, is now signed to A&M/Octone Records and managed by Jackson. Dreams really do come true! We recently caught up with the Charlotte, North Carolina, septet for this episode of “The 5.” During our rap sesh, North & Co. discusses their raucous live shows, a recent group bout with a gnarly case of the flu and how the band often busts out improv rhymes during long drives.
Paper Tongues’ debut album comes out March 30, and to celebrate the release, the band has plans to crisscross the States — and possibly beyond — for the next 24 months. Yikes! As Jackson would say, “These guys are some road dogs, dawg!”
Check out the interview below and, to wet your whistle, also take a look-see at Paper Tongues’ latest video for “Ride To California.”
New Interview: Justin Bieber On Love, Twitter, Tattoos And Michael Jackson
Author: webcRight after Justin Bieber’s live MTV.com performance (watch it below if you somehow missed it) and just before the release of his new album, My World 2.0, we caught up with Justin before he took off for London and asked him seven quick questions (since he had a plane to catch, and far be it from us to keep Justin Bieber away from the Bieber Fever spreading through Western Europe.)
