Jay-Z’s “Empire State Of Mind” is an undeniable classic, and it absolutely owned the summer of 2009. But let’s be honest. While it shouted out lots of triborough geographical points of interest, it was really about being in a Manhattan state of mind. But in 2007, Jay-Z paid tribute to Brooklyn, the borough that got him born in the Beastie Boys-referencing “Hello Brooklyn 2.0,” featuring Lil Wayne, off of American Gangster.

Fast-forward to now. Production threesome Cookin’ Soul, who’ve put their polish on tracks for Soulja Boy, Kanye, Cassie, Nicki Minaj and more, took Jay-Z’s “Hello Brooklyn 2.0″ and the Quincy Jones classic “Summer In The City,” and added some beast black-and-white visuals. Looks like Brooklyn — it’s the New Manhattan! — just got a new look for summer.

Video Premiere: Lil Wayne, ‘Da Da Da’

It’s been a while since we’ve worn our grill but we can’t think of a more perfect time to get that sucker out of retirement than for MTV Jams to premiere four new Lil Wayne videos this weekend.

The first one’s called “Da Da Da” and features Weezy rocking the face off of a Miami rooftop. Weezy filmed the clip, along with 11 others, back in February over the span of three days, banking a boatload of videos before reporting to Rikers. Dude may be a felon, but dude’s no slacker.

And if you get a little déjà vu sensation watch “Da Da Da,” it’s because the video is oddly reminiscent of the classic U2’s classic “Where The Streets Have No Name” video, which was filmed gorilla-style on a rooftop in Los Angeles back in 1987. We’re sure Bono would be proud.

Check out the video for Lil Wayne’s “Da Da Da” below, and tune into MTV Jams this weekend to catch even more clips, including “Knockout” with Nicki Minaj, “Runnin” with Shanell, and “Get a Life.”

New Video: Lil Wayne, ‘I’m Single’

Author: webc

In this new video for Lil’ Wayne’s “I’m Single,” we get a decidedly backstage look at Weezy’s pre-incarceration life. You know, the usual: relationship advice from Nicki Minaj, making some music, driving a pretty mint looking Bugatti, having “adult time” with a lady, making said lady act like a crazy child by ignoring their texts and having adult time with their friends. Day-in-the-life kinda Weezy stuff.

Directed by DJ Scoob Doo, “I’m Single” has a pretty authentic, if somewhat off-the-cuff, feel to it. The cut was taken from Weezy’s stellar ‘09 mixtape, No Ceilings and, with that in mind, the video sort of matches the whole off-handed charm that mixtapes tend to have.

Check out Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” video below. You can check out No Ceilings here.

  • Ozzy Osbourne debuted “Let Me Hear You Scream,” the first single off his June 15th disc Scream, on last night’s episode of CSI: NY. The rocker plans to announce his 18-month tour shortly, and promises news about Ozzfest will arrive next week.
  • Snoop Dogg, MGMT, Willie Nelson and the Flaming Lips have been added to the Glastonbury lineup. The BBC reports that the fest, which runs from June 23rd through 27th, is already sold out.
  • While Lil Wayne blogs from jail, the video for “I’m Single” from his acclaimed No Ceilings mixtape will be released to the masses. MTV2 will debut the clip on Sunday, MTV News reports.
  • Special edition releases of the all-AC/DC soundtrack for Iron Man 2 will hit stores Monday. The Collectors Edition includes a limited-edition reprint of the 1968 comic “The Invincible Iron Man” and a cartoon drawn by Angus Young, as well as a 50-minute DVD packed with AC/DC footage and an early look at the movie.

Lil Wayne makes his living as the bestselling rapper on the planet, but while serving his year-long jail sentence at New York’s Rikers Island, Weezy has entirely new job: keeping watch over suicidal inmates. Antonia “Toya” Johnson, the mother of one of Wayne’s children, tells Us Weekly, “Wayne has a job. They got him on suicide watch for other prisoners. He watches the crazy prisoners and makes sure they don’t kill themselves.” Finding himself in a 9-to-5, albeit in prison, Weezy shares a similar complaint with much of the working population. “He likes the job even though they don’t pay him much,” Toya says of the Young Money multimillionaire.

Toya adds that Lil Wayne is adjusting well to prison life, and getting along with his fellow inmates. He’s even managed to avoid getting a haircut. As Rolling Stone previously reported, in addition to suicide prevention tasks, the rapper is also a fledgling jailhouse blogger, writing responses to fan mail on his Weezy Thanx You blog from Rikers, where Lil Wayne is serving a year behind bars — or less with good behavior — after pleading guilty to weapons charges stemming from a 2007 arrest in New York City.

As for Toya’s reality-TV costar Tameka “Tiny” Cottle’s fiancee T.I., who just wrapped his own gun-related sentence at a halfway house outside Atlanta, the King rapper’s role during his prison term was serving as a motivational speaker to his fellow inmates — a job he performed before heading off to jail, too.

Rolling Stone’s recent headline “Lil Wayne Goes to Jail” has finally come true: After a pair of temporary reprieves, Lil Wayne was officially sentenced to a year behind bars in a New York courtroom today after pleading guilty to weapons charges stemming from an incident in the Big Apple in 2007. Following the sentencing, Wayne was handcuffed as he exited the courthouse en route to New York’s Riker’s Island, the city jail where the rapper will serve his prison stint. According to the AP, Weezy’s legal team requested that he be placed in protective custody as opposed to the general population due to his status as a celebrity and the numerous dental surgeries the rapper underwent prior to his sentencing.

USA Today reports that while Wayne was given a year-long sentence, there’s a good chance he’ll only spend two-thirds, or eight months, of his term behind bars, as in these situations inmate often get time off for good behavior. Wayne sat quietly next to his legal team during his sentencing, opting not to address the court and simply nodding his head when the judge asked whether he understood the charges he was facing. Upon exiting the courthouse, his hands handcuffed behind his back, he gave the crowd of 100 fans and supporters a slight bow before heading off to prison.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Weezy managed to avoid sentencing twice prior to finally being shipped off to prison today: Wayne’s initial sentencing was postponed three weeks so the rapper could undergo dental procedures — reportedly eight root canal surgeries — before starting his jail term. Last week, a courthouse fire forced Weezy’s sentencing to be postponed yet again, and Wayne celebrated his unexpected freedom by appearing onstage with Young Jeezy and Drake at Jay-Z’s Madison Square Garden concert. Wayne spent the rest of his last week of freedom on Twitter and Ustream, and unveiled on last pre-prison video for “Drop the World.”

Lil Wayne was sentenced today to a year in jail in New York City for having a loaded gun on his tour bus in 2007, then was taken away in handcuffs to begin his term immediately.

Lil Wayne didn’t go to prison yesterday due to a courthouse fire, but that didn’t stop the rapper from “Goin’ In” during Young Jeezy’s set at Jay-Z’s “Blueprint 3″ tour stop in New York last night (March 2). According to MTV, his sentencing has been rescheduled for Monday (Mar. 8).

A fire at the New York City courthouse where Lil Wayne was scheduled to be sentenced today has forced the proceedings to be postponed, a source at the 100 Centre St. court house tells Rolling Stone. The fire allegedly started in the basement of the courthouse and forced everyone at the location to evacuate the building. Neither Lil Wayne nor his legal team were present in the courthouse at the time of the blaze, as it occurred before Weezy was expected to arrive at the building. A source tells RS the building will be shut down for the remainder of the day and all jurors on the scene were told to get their belongings and exit the premises. The New York Fire Department said that a boiler may be responsible for the fire, which filled the courthouse’s lobby with a haze of smoke.

At press time, it remains unclear whether Lil Wayne’s hearing will be moved to another venue or postponed until a later date. Given the number of people in Wayne’s legal party, officials might seek to simply move today’s scheduled proceeding to another venue. A court spokesperson did say however that all court proceedings for today had been postponed. According to NY1, five firefighters, two civilians and one criminal all suffered minor injuries as a result of the fire.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Lil Wayne was originally scheduled to begin serving his sentence after pleading guilty to weapons charges stemming from a 2007 arrest on February 9th, however some last-minute dental procedures—reportedly eight root canals—led the judge to postpone Weezy’s sentencing until today. The judge was adamant that Wayne be sentenced on March 2nd, telling the rapper and his legal team that there would be no more delays.

Wayne, who is expected to serve a year behind bars, has recently taken to his newly launched Twitter account to bid farewell to his family and friends before heading to New York’s Riker’s Island prison, where he’s expected serve his term. “the F is for family, friends, and fans… thank u…your love and prayers are felt,” Weezy tweeted. “They kant lok up my heart bekuz y’all already have it on lok.”
